Institute of Filipino Martial Arts
1st European Summer Camp 2005

By Noel Perkins (Apprentice Instructor IFMA/Europe)

This three-day event was held in Warwick in August 2005 and was attended by over 40 instructors and students of the Institute of Filipino Martial Arts (IFMA) from England, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Hungary and the United States.

Training was carried out in all ranges of combat and the material covered included: coordination and combat drills (e.g. single stick; double stick); projectile and flexible weapons training; and the use of various types of innovative training equipment for developing attributes such as accuracy, power, and reaction speed.

There was a significant amount of sparring with padded weapons, which encompassed the utilisation of different weapons and weapon combinations; environmental training; and the management of multiple opponents from both a solo defenders’ point of view, as well as the use of team tactics in group combat scenarios.

The camp concluded with an intense session of paintballing in teams, which was a very enlightening experience!  It brought new meaning to the term “impact training” in relation to a paintball travelling at 200mph towards you!

The summer camp provided an opportunity for IFMA members to forge new friendships, renew old ones, and to grow together in the Filipino Martial Arts through shared mutual experiences.  The camp achieved its objectives and was a resounding success. We’re all looking forward to next year!
